Triathlon England Reorganisation
Posted: 12th May

Triathlon England has recently gone under a reorganisation following the funding award from Sport England. The South East Region will remain the same with the Regional Committee responsible for its governance. The Regional Development Managers are now known as Regional Programme Managers (RPM) and are no longer ‘attached’ to a region. The South East Region now has the benefit of three RPM’s working within its boundaries;

  • Stefan Pearce – Berkshire & Oxfordshire
  • Ceri Winter – Buckinghamshire & Kent
  • Kat Valk – Hampshire, Sussex & Surrey

Outlined below are the Strategic Priorities for Triathlon England for 2009 – 13 and the subsequent main work areas for the Development Team (including the RPM’s)

Triathlon England Strategic Priorities:

  • Development of excellence.. This requires the development of a clear pathway from introduction to the sport to the environments appropriate to the abilities of any given athlete.
  • Building the performance pathway to achieve the development of excellence. The talent programme aims to match the right athlete with identified potential to the right coaches in exceptional environments.
  • Provision of appropriate events for athletes at the right time in their development.

Development Team Key Work Areas:

  • Talent clubs
Developing standards for clubs that aspire to cater for talented young athletes in the critical 14-19 age range. The current quality assurance schemes run for triathlon clubs will be reviewed to create a greater impact, specifically targeting junior (14-19) talent development.
  • Access to Triathlon Coaching
Provide athletes from all backgrounds with the opportunity to experience triathlon and triathlon coaching through taster / drop in sessions.
  • Schools Competition
Developing a competition structure in conjunction with the Youth Sport Trust that will provide a national template for multi-sports schools competition.
  • Right Event, Right Place, Right Organiser
It is essential that there is an appropriate event for every athlete at regular intervals within a reasonable travelling time from their home.
  • Events
The experience of an athlete at an event, regardless of their experience in triathlon, will shape their opinion of the sport. Improve the quality of existing and new events.
  • Officiating
Increase the quality and quantity of race officials through recruitment, training and reward.
  • Volunteers
Running events and clubs requires a workforce that is dedicated, skilled and enthusiastic. Volunteers will be identified and assisted to build their skills and knowledge base.
  • Quality Assured Clubs
Ensuring that the accreditation and development scheme for clubs is appropriate for all types of clubs.
  • Coaching
It has become apparent that there is a requirement to build a coaching system around our trained and qualified coaches. This will help them to become better coaches, who provide better coaching and subsequently build better clubs. To develop cohorts of talent specialists with coaching at the heart.
  • Triathlon for All
Continue to provide and create appropriate participation opportunities for all segments of the community. This activity will go a long way to ensuring sustainable growth of our sport over the next 4 years and beyond.

These are the headline activity areas and it is hoped that each and every club in the region will directly benefit from the development activities in the areas outlined. The information above is intended to give a brief overview, if you have any questions or would like to discuss this in more detail please feel free to contact one of the RPMs above.

Classification of Disabled Athletes for Triathlon
Posted: 13th Feb 2009

As the number of disabled athletes competing in triathlon increases at a consistent rate, British Triathlon is keen to offer disabled triathletes the opportunity to become officially classified in advance of the 2009 race season and the 2009 British Triathlon Disabled Championships.

Disabled triathletes who intend to compete in the International competition, National Championships and the National Disabled Triathlete Ranking Series must be officially classified. Disabled athletes who are members of one of the Home Nations, but only intend to compete at local level, are also encouraged to complete the Classification process, to assist the Federation in monitoring its progress within the disabled development of the sport.

Officially classified athletes will have their classification details printed on their Home Nation membership card, and will not require to produce any further documentation at National or International competition.

Physically Disabled Triathletes (athletes with amputation, paralysis, deformity, cerebral palsy, etc) who require classification can contact Julian Wills on julianwills@britishtriathlon.org or 01822 850454. A series of classification days will be held across the country at appropriate venues for athletes to attend. The venues will relate to the athletes location.

Visually Impaired and Blind Triathletes who require classification must have their eyes officially tested by an Ophthalmologist / Optometrist, asking them to complete the attached 'Competitors Medical Certificate'. The completed certificate must be sent to British Blind Sport, who will process the certificate and membership of British Blind Sport. The British Blind Sport membership card is the only proof of classification that British Triathlon requires to witness. For additional information about British Blind Sport and the 'Ophthalmologist process' please contact Carole Baxter on carole.baxter@britishblindsport.org.uk

Currently there is only classified triathlon competition at National level for Triathletes with Learning Disabilities. Formal classification is managed by the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disabilities. Presentation of UKSAPLD membership card is the only requirement for British Triathlon classification. For advice on completing the UKSAPLD classification process please contact Kathy Anstey on sport@mencap.org.uk or 01924 234912.

Currently there is only classified triathlon competition at National level for Hearing Impaired and Deaf Triathletes. Athletes competing within this classification must have a hearing impairment as defined by Deaflympics and British Deaf Sport. Official audiogrammes can be obtained through www.ukdeafsport.org.uk Presentation of fully completed audiogrammes is the requirement for British Triathlon classification.

31 AUGUST - INTER REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008

Picture with thanks to Martin Ingle at Bodyworks.

Congratulations to the South East IRC Team!

They have now won the Mazda Inter Regional Championships four times in a row.

The South East region held onto their title in the Mazda British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships on Saturday following a series of six exciting races across Tri Star and Youth levels. The defending champions held off challenges from Scotland and the improved Eastern region who finished second and third respectively.

The championships were held at the sports centre at Aldershot Garrison which will be the holding camp for Team GB when they gather before the London Games in 2012. The athletes swam in a 50m pool before completing a technical bike course around the barracks. The racing continued with a run combining grass and track.

The race proved to be a success for the South East off the field of play as well as on it. Triathlon England South East Region hosted an excellently organised event, thanks in particular to the Irish Guards, Trisport Coaching UK the local sponsor, Farnham Tri Club and Martin Allen the event organiser. Special thanks also to Sarah Coope, Team Manager and Bodyworks for the fantastic support they gave the athletes.

During the presentation of the medals and awards British Triathlon Federation Director, Ian Braid, announced that in 2009 the Mazda British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships will be held at Bryn Bach Parc in Tredegar, Wales. Next year’s race will include an open water swim for the first time and be staged on the course used in the Corus Elite Series.
